6/28/2023 0 Comments Skin folk nalo hopkinsonIt's a use of fantasy elements as something often horrifying, scary, yes, but something that leads to truth, catharsis, release. I felt that I didn't need to read fiction in order to experience it. The general message that I got from it was "life sucks, sometimes it's not too bad, but mostly people are mean to each other, then they die." But, rightly or wrongly, I felt as though I'd already figured that out. I think Hopkinson sums up this collection quite well in this interview:Īs a young reader, mimetic fiction (fiction that mimics reality) left me feeling unsatisfied. This short story collection is sci-fi fantasy and has so much to say about gender, and the Gaze, and Nalo Hopkinson's writing is honest to god so good. When we act in fear, or when we don't act out of empathy, that is when we become the monster. Apathy makes us allow horrible things to happen to them. Fear makes us do horrible things to people. Perhaps the only thing worse than fear is apathy.

Sage is a popular TV journalist who always seems to have the scoop on breaking news stories. One of the more popular (yet enigmatic) characters from the Charlton stable has to be Vic Sage AKA The Question. Blue Beetle, The Question and Captain Atom all received their own series. And in Alan Moore's proposal for the groundbreaking series " The Watchmen," the Charlton heroes were originally to be the stars of the series.įollowing the events of "Crisis," DC launched a number of series based on the Charlton heroes. In 1985, when DC Comics launched the mini-series "Crisis on Infinite Earths," the various Charlton heroes were merged into the DC Universe. Still, its immersive depiction of Taoist tradition and one historical Chinatown is likely to inspire further reading. This page-turner shouldn't be taken as non-fiction. As it turned out, the novel it most reminded me of was Frank Busch's Grey Eyes, from last year – another suspenseful, tightly plotted story about magic outside the European tradition. A Superior Man is meant as historical fiction, though, and while thorough research backs The Girl with Ghost Eyes, it's marketed as fantasy. In both, white people play mere bit parts, a refreshing change. Both concern saving face and questions of belonging in late-19th-century North American Chinese communities. The Girl with Ghost Eyes shares much with Paul Yee's A Superior Man, also published this year. Boroson's imaginative, adventure-filled debut. Li-lin, a young woman gifted with the ability to see the spirit world, must battle a powerful sorcerer to save San Francisco's Chinatown in M.H. Through the Looking-Glass includes such verses as " Jabberwocky" and " The Walrus and the Carpenter", and the episode involving Tweedledum and Tweedledee. There she finds that, just like a reflection, everything is reversed, including logic (for example, running helps one remain stationary, walking away from something brings one towards it, chessmen are alive, nursery rhyme characters exist, and so on). Alice again enters a fantastical world, this time by climbing through a mirror into the world that she can see beyond it. Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There (also known as Alice Through the Looking-Glass or simply Through the Looking-Glass) is a novel published on 27 December 1871 (though indicated as 1872) by Lewis Carroll, a mathematics professor at the University of Oxford, and the sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). English and the Romance languages have the same word here, although German has ‘Tier’, which feels closer to ‘beast’. In what follows I evoke the arguments and implications of a few words in the Dictionary.Īnimal. How does one translate a book about untranslatable terms? With fear and trembling, and a dose of hope. But we feel we could do better and that’s why we keep trying. To be precise, we don’t always fail, sometimes we succeed rather well. It is not what we can’t or don’t translate but what we can’t stop trying and failing to translate. Barbara Cassin, the inventor and editor of the French book on which this English edition is based, and the continuing lively mind behind the whole enterprise, offers a compelling definition of what an untranslatable word or phrase is. The Dictionary of Untranslatables takes the practice of translation as an invitation to understand ourselves and our cultures better. 1 (2003), published by the University of Nebraska Press. And in 2003, I wrote about my decades of research in "Reclaiming Polly Bemis: China's Daughter, Idaho's Legendary Pioneer," Frontiers: A Journal of Women Studies 24, no. My research did not end with the book's publication in 1981 but extended across the Pacific to the Peoples Republic of China. Researching Lalu/Polly's life in the late 1970s and 1980 for Thousand Pieces of Gold, I interviewed pioneers and scoured memoirs, studied photographs, official documents, articles in newspapers and magazines. I love the main character and how she narrates. Too much for expectations. I just love it and enjoy it. It’s in London with zero German terms (has a bunch of Latins though). Very short, though! I also expected it to be set in Germany and have some German terms. I mean, the more you think about time travel the more it gets weird, right? It didn’t meet my expectations but in a good way because this definitely is better than what I had expected. Most likely to finish in one sitting and I mean the whole series. I expected this series to be serious and have an ancient aura to it because it’s about time travel. The books are fast paced and really short. Ruby Red is very special series for me because it was my first read of the year! And boy, was it good to start your year! 6/28/2023 0 Comments Valerie solanas manifestoThrough her aggressive factual claims and calls to action, Solanas provokes her audience into challenging and acting against society’s unfair restrictions on women and narrow-minded notions of gender.īy presenting and analyzing aggressive factual claims, Solanas boldly reverses traditional views and appalls the reader into challenging society’s unjust attitudes toward women. Along with a systematic use of obscenity, her seemingly absurd statements actually build toward a specific motive: to shock both men and women out of complacency with society’s sexism. Nevertheless, readers cannot simply dismiss her manifesto as a crazy woman’s tirade. Shortly after her self-publication, Solanas shot and almost killed Andy Warhol, causing even more people to spurn her as insane. Because of articles like “How to Be a Good Housewife” and television shows like Leave It to Beaver from the 1950s, however, society still expected women to remain at home and nurture their families. Sold by Solanas on the streets, it came during a supposedly progressive era at the close of the civil rights movement and the emergence of the anti-war movement. 1 This radical manifesto declared that women must “overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation, and destroy the male sex” (Solanas). In 1967, Valerie Solanas wrote and self-published the SCUM Manifesto, which called for male gendercide and the creation of a superior, all-female society. 6/27/2023 0 Comments Nicola samori nicola samoriDer Neid, 2005 other works were constructed as if assembled from archeological remnants – e.g. The gallery showcases new marble and wax sculptures as well as Samorì’s latest series of paintings on canvas, copper, linen and wood.Īt its essence, the whole corpus of Nicola Samorì's work is a profound meditation on time and the fragility of existence: His earliest works appeared to be paintings of X-rays of individuals as if seen in a morgue – e.g. Rosenfeld porcini presents L’Âge Mûr, a first UK solo exhibition of Italian artist Nicola Samorì, which follows his initial participation in the sculpture exhibition Memory and in The Continuation of Romance, a group exhibition exploring the renaissance of painting in contemporary art. It felt pretty formulaic and stereotypical, so I was never really shocked or emotional at anything that happened. Small town, summer, slow burn romance, family drama, a mistake that leads to more family drama and a breakup, then they make up. I saw so many glowing reviews for this that I basically harrassed my library into buying a copy, but I'm sad that my lasting impression of it is that is was just kinda average? There were certainly things I loved about it like the character development and the setting at a bakery and the gorgeous art style and how Hector would call Ari out when he was being a baby or manipulative, but I thought the rest of the plot was just kinda typical. |
